Before joining any of our hands-on labs, it really helps to know which Microsoft account you’re working with. Most people actually have more than one without realising it — a personal one, maybe a Family subscription, and sometimes a school or work account on top of that.
The good news is that figuring it out is quick, painless, and doesn’t require a degree in wizardry.
Here’s the simple idea:
Microsoft has three main types of accounts, and knowing which one you have helps us guide you to the right tools, the right features, and the right training session.
Personal Account (Free)
This is the everyday one — Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, Live.com. Free, simple, and great for basics.
Microsoft 365 Family (Paid Personal)
This one gives you the “fancy” versions of apps like Word, Excel, and Outlook, but it’s still personal. It doesn’t include business-grade tools like Teams admin features or SharePoint.
Business or School Account (Licensed)
This one is issued by your company or educational institution. It unlocks the full Microsoft 365 toolbox — Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive for Business, Viva, and all the collaboration magic.
And now the part everyone dreads but turns out to be surprisingly easy.
How to Check Which One You Have
Head to your Microsoft Account page
Sign in
Look for your account details:
• If the email ends in @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, or @live.com, or a personal mail like a @gmail.com — it’s personal.
• If you see “Microsoft 365 Family” under Subscriptions — you’ve got the premium personal one.
• If the address ends in your school or company’s domain — that’s your licensed business/school account.
Once you know which account you have, picking the right lab is a breeze — personal accounts give you the basics, Family gives you the premium apps, and business/school licences give you the full buffet.
And if you get stuck? Just reach out — confusion is temporary, support is forever.
